Senior Research Fellow at the Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit (Physics): Functional nanomaterials and applied spectroscopy
Location of the position and field of science
The five-year position starting from 1 January 2017 or later according to mutual agreement with the successful applicantwill be placed at Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit (NANOMO) at the Faculty of Science of the University of Oulu, Finland. NANOMO is a highly international research environment, which in 2017 is formed by three professors and around 40 other researchers including ERC-starting Grant PI. The focus is on molecular level nanomaterials research, novel applications of spectroscopic and imaging techniques and in physics didactics research. The main external funding sources are European Union ERC and Horizon2020 programs, Academy of Finland, China Scholarship council and foundations and funds.
NANOMO carries out electron-, ion- and UV-to-X-ray spectroscopic and imaging experiments of both low-density and condensed materials. Main part of the experimental research focuses on the activies at international synchrotron radiation centers. The unit coordinates the Finnish national participation to the MAX IV facility, participates in the planning and constructing of the FinEstBeaMS beamline, and has a wide interdisciplinary and intersectorial national collaboration network on the field.
The competitive work environment at NANOMO is seen as high number of research output. Since 2012, the NANOMO unit has had 17 Ph.D. degrees, around 160 peer-reviewed papers, 6 IPR announcements and 2 patents. The unit is also very active in M.Sc and B.Sc. education.
Required Qualifications and Job Responsibilities
The present call is for team leader of functional nanomaterials group in NANOMO. The objectives of the research are to develop novel nano and molecular materials for a more efficient, sustainable and cleaner world. The research is on the growth and characterization of novel materials, especially functional nanostructures. The researcher is also expected to work as a link to the collaborators in benefitting the synchrotron radiation related imaging and characterization methods in interdisciplinary manner.
The successful applicant must have a PhD or equivalent in physics. Applicant must show a visible scientific profile and a good knowledge of X-ray induced spectroscopies and molecular materials electronic structure in general. To continue the existing research directions profound abilities are required within nanomaterials designs, synthesis and functionalization. Experience of synchrotron radiation techniques (XPS, PEEM, RIXS and STXM) and their applications are mandatory for research and teaching tasks. Understanding of first-principles computations, although not mandatory, is also desired.
Fluent English, good communication skills and good teamwork skills are required. Further, shown potential in acquiring supplementary (extramural) funding and teaching experience will be taken as a merit when choosing the scientist. When assessing the applicant's qualifications, issues to be considered will include scientific publications, thesis supervision, activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field in question, scientific work abroad, and other international activities.
As a part of the NANOMO team, the duties also include supervising scientific research, i.e. PhD students and post doc researchers. Ability to maintaining and extend the international collaboration network of the NANOMO in the functional materials research is also mandatory. Participation in teaching as a part of the physics curriculum, and in supervision of M.Sc. and B.Sc. theses is naturally expected.
The salary will be based on the level 6 of the demand level chart for university-level teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific component). The salary is thus in practice about 3,500 - 5,000 € per month, depending on the appointee's qualification and experience.
